4 Mistakes when Potty Training

Updated: Jan 3

I decided to potty train my eldest son before I became a parenting coach. I thought: This shouldn’t be a big deal, everybody does it… I was so wrong!!!

Those were my 4 biggest mistakes:
  1. I didn’t check if my child was mature enough (physically and emotionally) to even start potty training – He reached the age of two and I just thought: hey, it’s a good time to start…..

  2. I gave my child no choice and just announced it to him: let’s say goodbye to the nappy…

  3. I chose the worse timing - near the birth of his younger brother.

  4. I got really emotional about “accidents” – angry, extremely disappointed and very frustrated.

Later I learned:

  • How important it is to look for SIGNS OF READINESS of a child, before you even start the process.

  • How crucial it is to let a child CHOOSE to when and how to be independent in his toilet training, it empowers him and teaches him responsibility.

  • How much TIMING is important! Choose a time when your child is emotionally and physically available to learn (and you too!).

  • That the key to success is for my child to understand that I TRUST him, and that I utterly believe he is able to do it.
